MEDICINE HAT, AB – Some big air and even faster times at the Medicine Hat Motocross Park over the weekend, as the 2017 Alberta Motocross Championships were held.

Saturday served as a practice day for the hundreds of competitors taking part, while Sunday and Monday gave the riders an opportunity to take home some hardware.

Local pro racer James Armstrong had a successful weekend, finishing second overall in his category and getting a chance to race on his home track.

Armstrong said it’s fulfilling to see the new crop of young racers emerge at events like this.

“Now that I’m at this point in my career that I made it to pro, it’s pretty cool,” said Armstrong. “Because, you get to see the kids younger like how I was. You really want to teach them and kind of improve the sport.”

Sunny conditions highlighted the three-day event, but the dry, dirt track proved to be difficult for some as it kicked up quite a bit of dust.

Despite this, many of the racers were able to shave 15 or even 30 seconds off their usual lap times due to the fast track.

Another local in Colton Medwed competed in the 85cc 12 to 16-year-old bracket, and added one of the best parts is getting to know the other competitors.

“Pretty cool to meet different people from different places, racing on the same thing.”

One of the local organizers of the event in Mckenzie Lacey also took to the track over the weekend.

As for Armstrong, he continues his pro cycle this upcoming weekend in Brooks before taking off to Drumheller for his next competition.
