The Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police are hoping the province will introduce legislation making it mandatory for doctors to report medically-unfit drivers to licencing agencies.

Alberta, Quebec and Nova Scotia are the only three provinces which don’t have mandatory reporting in place. In Alberta, doctors can report on a voluntary basis.

“What we’re asking for is for those medical experts to alert registries when there is an unfit driver,” said Medicine Hat Police Chief Andy McGrogan. “It’s really just all about safety for all Albertans, including the people who are unfit to drive, and everybody else who is sharing the road with the,.

Family physician Dr. Bill Ruzycki says he will discuss with his patients if they show signs they are not longer fit to drive.

“When I realize that they are no longer capable of operating motor vehicles safely, I discuss it with them, and the vast majority of the time, they agree to give up their licence, and I don’t need to notify the province,” he said.

Brian Mason, Minister of Transportation, says his ministry is consulting with the Ministry of Health to determine the course of action to take on the issue.
