Redcliff mayor seeking re-election

REDCLIFF, AB — Redcliff’s mayor is hoping voters will elect him back into office this fall.

Mayor Ernie Reimer has announced he is seeking re-election in this year’s municipal election.

Reimer was elected in 2013, defeating Rob Hazelaar. When he was first elected to the position, Reimer acknowledged there were several rough patches for council, including a review under the Municipal Government Act, but says they have started to smooth out.

“After a while, with certain key individuals in place and employed with the town, we got things under control and things were running fairly smooth and i don’t want to be just a one-and-done,” he said.

Reimer says he and council are proud of completing a sewer system upgrade in the town, but says there are other things he wants to accomplish as mayor.

Reimer says economic development remains a priority for the town, as several oil companies located in the town shut down amid the economic downturn. He says council is working with the Economic Development Alliance of Southeastern Alberta to help attract new businesses to the town, and also working with a realtor to sell homes in the town.

“The last three years, the economy has been at an all-time low,” he said. “We have houses here in Redcliff and empty spaces we’d like to see filled. It’s nice to have folks that are living in Redcliff and working in Redcliff.”

Reimer notes U-Haul, Iron Horse Energy and the future Kenworth location are among businesses which have moved or are moving into Redcliff.

At the moment, Reimer is the first candidate in Redcliff to announce he is seeking re-election.

This year, the election takes place October 16.
