MEDICINE HAT, AB — The family of a Medicine Hat man is hoping a fatality inquiry will provide answers about his death.

The provincial government is set to launch a three-day inquiry into the death of Glenn Piche at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital in 2013.

Piche, 49, was found hanging in his hospital room on June 20. He was resuscitated, but died from his injuries the next day.

“I hope at the end of this, it doesn’t happen to anybody else,” said Mark Piche, Glenn’s brother.

His family remembers him as a man full of life, who would gladly assist others.

“My brother was always there to help other people, always,” said Mark. “He’d pick people up off the street, feed them, house them in his home and stuff.”

“He was really funny,” said Stephan Piche, Glenn’s nephew. “He loved to joke around all the time. That was his thing.”

When Glenn died, he left behind four daughters. His wife also died from suicide a year after his death.

“When it happened, it was traumatic,” said Julie Piche, Glenn’s sister-in-law.

“It was a hard blow,” said Mark. “She left a note saying she had gone to be with him.”

Alberta Health Services told Global News an initial review was done in 2013, and determined staff needed to be educated about assessing the suicide risk of a patient.

The inquiry runs for May 3-5 at the Medicine Hat provincial court.
