CRTC denies radio station licence change for Medicine Hat station

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has denied an application to change the licence of a Medicine Hat radio station.

In a decision released today, the CRTC denied the application for CJLT-FM (Praise FM) to amend and delete conditions of its licence relating to the Christian music format. The station had applied last year to the CRTC to operate an Indie/Alternative music station.

According to Vista, the proposed amendments were necessary to address the station’s financial viability, saying it would be unable to be financially viable under its current format. Vista also stated in its application if the format change was successful, it would continue to operate a Christian music station online in Medicine Hat.

Vista received several interventions in support of the application and against the application from community members. The Jim Pattison Broadcast Group (which licences MY96 and CHAT 94.5 FM) and Clear Sky Radio, which licences (CJCY-FM), also submitted interventions against the application, saying it would have a negative financial impact on the Medicine Hat radio market.

The radio station is still on-air.
