MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service have released more information about Sunday evening’s fatal collision, and do not believe they will lay charges.

Sgt. Clarke White with the police service’s traffic unit says a 53-year-old man from Calgary died after being struck by a semi-truck and trailer on the westbound Trans-Canada Highway between 16th Street SW and Sixth Street SW, near the Gershaw Drive overpass. The collision occurred at approximately 9:10 p.m.

“The location of where the male was attempting to cross was not at an intersection or crosswalk,” he said. “Speed and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors relating to the driver of the semi, however alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor pertaining to the pedestrian.”

White says police are not expected to lay charges against the driver of the semi.

White says the highway was closed until 4:30 a.m. as investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash.

The man is not being identified, as police work to identify next of kin.

Members of the Victims Assistance Unit were also called in to speak with witnesses and the driver of the semi.
