MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s one of the most common diseases in Canada, and a national group is doing their part to help raise awareness about Type 1 and 2 diabetes.

Diabetes Canada representatives made the journey down to the Cypress Centre on Sunday to host an information session as part of their Community Awareness Day.

Community Health Promotion Coordinator Anita Quach said you’d be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t been touched by the disease.

“Diabetes really affects everyone across the nation,” said Quach. “About 11 million Canadians live with diabetes, and we really want to build awareness about the prevention and management of diabetes. And, to really reduce that number over time.”

Three speakers were brought in to provide information on a number of topics, including foot & eye care, along with maintaining a proper diet.

Quach said the hope is for better education for patients across the province.

“We know that individuals always have questions on food,” she said. “And with foot care as well, this Pathway is coming out to help manage diabetes and diabetes complications. That’s something that’s really going to reduce the number of amputations over time in Alberta.”

According to Diabetes Canada, one Canadian is diagnosed with diabetes every three minutes.

Quach added it’s huge to have a support system while living with diabetes.

“It’s a huge part of diabetes management and we don’t want you to feel alone,” she said. “With diabetes you’re not alone, you have programs all across the country and Diabetes Canada to help support you throughout your whole journey.”

With a strong crowd showing up on Sunday afternoon, Quach said there are plans to bring back the event for 2018.
