MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service continues to search for a man in connection with an armed robbery at the Mac’s convenience store on Sunday, a man who a security manager with the company says apologized during the robbery.

According to police, a man entered the store on 12th Street Northeast, displayed a weapon at the clerk, and made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

Doug Hartl, manager of security, government and customer relations with Mac`s in Western Canada, says according to a staff member, an apology was one of the comments made by the suspect during the robbery.

“That tells me that it’s pretty local and that the guy was pretty desperate and didn’t want to hurt anybody,” he said over the phone. “They don’t typically apologize for doing any robberies.”

Hartl also said Mac’s takes efforts to make the store less appealing for robbers, by limiting the amount of cash on the premises, and adds they tell employees to hand over whatever the robber wants.

“We basically deal with robberies as another cash transaction,” he said. “You get them in, you get them out and there’s no confrontation. The last thing we want to do is get anybody hurt.”

The suspect is described as Caucasian, around 30-years-old with a heavier set build, and was wearing a red and white bandana on his face, black hoodie jacket, black sweat pants with white stripes along the legs, and white gloves.

The suspect was also carrying a white backpack with blue rope pull straps. CHAT News Today has obtained images of the suspect, taken from surveillance footage at the store.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call police at 403-529-8481.
