MEDICINE HAT, AB – A scare for the Real Canadian Superstore on Friday, as an early morning power outage forced the closure of the store for the day.

City of Medicine Hat crews have determined that the outage along Trans-Canada Way was caused by an electrical pole fire as a result of weather the previous night.

All but 14 businesses were back up and running by 8:00 a.m. though a handful, such as Superstore, remained in the dark.

Superstore’s parent company Loblaws addressed concerns over potential spoiled food in a statement on Monday.

“The power outage on April 14th in South Eastern Medicine Hat affected the Real Canadian Superstore for approx. 11 hours. During this time, perishable food items were place in refrigerated and frozen trailers that allowed for products to be stored at optimal temperatures. To maintain the quality of perishable items we have strict quality assurance protocols that include routine temperature checks and checking product before placing it back in-store. Our customers have expressed their appreciation of the steps we took during the power outage.”
