Review Board hearing for Matthew de Grood ends

Apr 6, 2017 | 4:27 PM

CALGARY — The review board hearing for a Calgary man who killed five young people at a house party in 2014 has wrapped up.

The hearing comes just 10 months after Matthew de Grood was found not criminally responsible for the deaths of Zackariah Rathwell, Jordan Segura, Josh Hunter, Kaitlin Perras, and Lawrence Hong in Brentwood.

On Thursday, the board was told de Grood was a model patient who was a low risk to offend in a controlled environment.

Dr. Sergio Santana added de Grood is on medication for schizophrenia and has not shown symptoms for almost three years.

Santana is asking de Grood be allowed out of the secure hospital ward he is being held to walk around the grounds under supervision. He adds his privileges would be curtailed if there are any problems.

The families of the Brentwood Five read victim impact statements at the review hearing. De Grood also issued a statement through his lawyer, expressing regret for his crime.

The Review Board will now decide whether they will keep de Grood in the hospital, allow him into the community with conditions, or grant him a full discharge.

The families of the Brentwood Five want de Grood to remain in a secure facility.
