Conservative candidates win big in Calgary byelections

CALGARY — The Conservative Party of Canada were victorious in a pair of byelections Monday night in Alberta.

Bob Benzen received 71.5 per cent of the vote in Calgary Heritage, the riding previously held by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Liberal candidate Scott Forsyth received 21.7 per cent of the vote.

In Calgary Mindapore, the former riding of current Progressive Conservative leader Jason Kenney, Stephanie Kusie received 77 per cent of the vote. Liberal candidate Haley Brown received 17 per cent of the vote.

Benzen is a small business owner who has canvassed for the Conservatives and spearheaded a project dubbed “Decade of Excellence” to thank Harper for his work as prime minister. Kusie is a former diplomat with a political science degree from the University of Calgary and an MBA from Rutgers.

Three other byelections took place in Ontario and Quebec on Tuesday, and were won by Liberal Party candidates. Mary Ng won the Markham—Thornhill seat with 51 per cent of the vote. Mona Fortier won the Ottawa-Vanier seat, also with 51 per cent of the vote. Emmanuella Lambropoulos won Saint-Laurent in Quebec with 59 per cent of the vote.
