MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Interpretive Centre at Police Point Park will get the opportunity to freshen up the building, thanks to a generous community donation.

The Medicine Hat Accommodation Association donated $270,000 to the centre Wednesday afternoon. The donation is part of the association’s Legacy Fund, which helps enhance local tourist attractions.

“Police Point Park is really a hidden gem in our community,” said Elisha Ammann, executive director of the association. “It really brings together a lot of the feelings and branding for Medicine Hat. It is for families, it is for outdoor enthusiasts, it brings in culture, the Grasslands Naturalists host plenty of activities here.”

The Interpretive Centre was built 35 years ago and Corlaine Gardner, chief park interpreter, said it has not received many major upgrades since opening.

“It was built in1982, and all of this use has been hard on it,” she said. “It’s going to be really great to be able to give it a nice spruce up, and make it more accessible and welcoming to everyone.”

The funding will be used to help the centre upgrade its exhibit space and work to make the building more accessible. The front door will be replaced with a handicap-accessible door, and the washrooms will also be made accessible for everyone. Other upgrades will go towards the viewpoint wooden platform and seating area in the park.

“Hopefully, bringing the Police Point Nature Centre up to a more modern look, and more welcoming, that people will realize that they can come down here whenever they like,” said Gardner.

The upgrades are expected to begin this summer.
