Alarming number of goldfish found in ponds

EDMONTON, AB — The Alberta government is urging people not to flush goldfish — alive or dead — down the toilet or drop them into ponds or rivers.

It says goldfish infestations have been found in storm water ponds at alarming rates over the last few years.

The fish can grow to the size of a dinner plate, and are both a competitor and predator for native fish.

The province says even dead goldfish that get flushed could eventually get into water bodies and harm native fish.
