MEDICINE HAT, AB — With fraud prevention month coming to an end, Medicine Hat police officers want to make sure your personal information is not stolen.

On Saturday, police, in partnership with ERA and Medicine Hat Safe Community Association hosted an electronic recycling event.

Locals were able to drop off electronic equipment, such as computers, cell phones, keyboards, and hard drives, to REDI Bottle Depot.

Hard drives were shredded on spot to assure that personal information is protected.

Blain Cheverie, operations supervisor at REDI Bottle Depot, said shredding devices is meant to avoid identity theft.

“That’s a big problem around with the electronic age, so I would recommend anybody who is not sure what to do with hard drives to bring them down here,” he said.

Const. Josh Argue said identity theft is a problem here in the Hat but no bigger than any other city.

REDI Depot has electronic recycling bins available for drop off everyday, which gets shipped to Calgary every two weeks.

ERA representative from Calgary said depending on the condition, items can get refurbished and donated to someone who needs it.

“With technology and computers and stuff there is high turn over but a lot of that equipment it still perfectly functional for people who don’t have it ,” Brian Guizzo said.

The event is until 3p.m on Saturday
