LEADER, SK — Taking money from one pocket and putting it in another pocket is how the mayor of Leader explained Saskatchewan’s budget.

Mayor Craig Tondevold said he is disappointed with the province’s budget but is not surprised.

He said he is most disappointed with the province discontinuing money the town gets for Sask Power and Sask Energy Building in lieu of taxes.

Tondevold said the one per cent increase in provincial sales tax (PST) is going to increase expenses on everything.  He said the education tax is going to upset a lot of residents.

“Well they’re going to be pretty upset over that because that’s a big part of their tax notice and this is going to hurt all of our residents.”

He said the province is cutting back on services, like the government bus service that travels from rural Saskatchewan to urban cities.

“That’s going to affect the middle incomer, there’s a lot of issues for the middle incomer,” he said. “Although they did say they were going to lower the income tax, but on the other hand, they’re taking a lot of other things as well as raising the PST.”

He said he would like to see the province spend their money more reasonably.
