MEDICINE HAT, AB — One of the two men charged with second-degree murder in connection with a New Year’s Eve homicide has been released from custody.

Luke Boxell, 21, was granted release during an appearance at Court of Queen’s Bench on Tuesday. He was released on a $10,000 cash surety and strict conditions.

Boxell has been released into the care and supervision of his immediate family in Manitoba, and will be under house arrest there for 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Staff Sargent Trevor Humphries said it’s unlikely Boxell will pose a risk to the Medicine Hat community.

“The individual is not going to be a concern for the community of Medicine Hat because part of the conditions of release is that he will be residing with family and he will not be in Alberta,” said Humphries

Part of the court imposed conditions are that Boxell is not allowed to be in Medicine Hat unless he has a scheduled court date or a meeting with his lawyer.

Boxell was one of two men charged in connection with the death of Jordan Pede. The 24-year-old was found suffering from a gunshot wound in Strathcona Island Park on New Year’s Eve and died 11 days later in a Calgary hospital.

Boxell was arrested in January, while the second suspect, Leonard Beaulieu, was arrested in Manitoba in February.

Beaulieu, who was also charged with second-degree murder, remains in custody and is expect back in court on March 29.

Boxell is scheduled to appear in a Medicine Hat courtroom tomorrow to enter a plea.
