MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat is gearing up to celebrate a week of diversity and inclusion.

Raising the Curtain is the city’s first community event that will honour Medicine Hat’s different cultures.

The four day event will educate Hatters on culutral traditions and ceremonies.

“Everything from a smudging ceremony over at the college, to food at many of these events,” Councillor Les Pearson said.  “But the most important thing for me is going to be Shine at the Esplanade, where all of these cultural diversities will be on display.”

Pearson said there isn’t a big problem of racism in Medicine Hat, but it’s important to embrace cultural differences.

“I think we’re very tolerant, but sometimes we don’t understand ethnic diversity and it’s something we need to work at and this event will help us,” he said.

He said Raising the Curtain is all about accepting people for who they are and understanding where they come from.

“We’re all together and it’s okay to be different.  I think that’s a really important statement, in fact it’s something we should celebrate.”

The festivities will run from March 19 to March 22.
