City could receive up to 25 centimetres of snow by Sunday: Environment Canada

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Get your shovels out. More snow is on the way.

The city has been hit hard by snowfall since late Thursday night, and the snow keeps falling today.

Kirk Torneby, regional meteorologist with Environment Canada is predicting between four and eight centimetres of snow falling on the city today, based on radar data, and another wave of snow is expected to fall this weekend.

“It’s a bit of a unique setup we get in the winter sometimes,” he said over the phone from Edmonton. “We have a cold ridge of high pressure that’s kind of persistent to the east, which leads to an upflow, and we have an overrun of moisture from the Pacific that really starts to kick things off and allows those snowflakes to grow very big.”

Torneby predicts between 20 and 25 centimetres of snow will fall on Medicine Hat by the end of the weekend.

While the snow blowers will be active this weekend, relief is on its way.

“Really after the batch of snow goes through on Sunday, a lot of warm air starts to push up across the province, and really switches things around for us,” said Torneby

Monday will see sunny skies and a high of 8 degrees Celsius, while Wednesday has a high of 16 degrees in the forecast.
