MEDICINE HAT, AB — A donation from ATB Financial will help ensure Medicine Hat College students will be able to avoid financial problems during their education, in addition to helping students develop their entrepreneurial spirit.

The bank donated $6,000 to the college Tuesday afternoon, with $5,000 of the funding supporting student social entrepreneurship projects at the college, and the remaining funds being allocated to emergency bursary funding.

“It’s a great benefit to our students,” said Tracy Stroud, business development officer with the college. “We’ve had a long-lasting relationship with ATB, but them deciding to fund the social entrepreneurship side is a first for our partnership…we’re really excited to grow this partnership and go in that direction.”

Stroud says the college and ATB have been partners since 2010.

The social entrepreneurship program sees college students submit projects, with three students receiving funding to start their projects in the community. The projects must have a social impact in the community. Students are tasked with writing a report about their project, and the college provides addition funding to the project they feel is the best one. Stroud says the recipients of the funding from the program will be known in the next couple of weeks.

Stroud adds the funding provided by ATB will be helpful for students who may need financial assistance during their time in college.

“There are situations where students might find themselves in a position where they need a little support to get through that semester,” she said.

Jerri Gainer, branch manager for ATB on Second Street, agrees.

“Education is so important, especially nowadays,” she said. “We want people in our community, we want Albertans to be successful and come out and just have a life that they enjoy and they can excel it,” she said.
