EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Rachel Notley is in Washington D.C. this week to speak about the importance of cross-border trade.

The premier plans to meet with political and industry leaders, as well as Canadian embassy officials and think tank members, according to a provincial news release.

Notley said in a news conference earlier this month she is hoping to get clarity on the Trump administrations plans for trade while also reiterating how beneficial Alberta’s economy is to the U.S.

Last year,  trade between Alberta and the U.S. totalled more than $84.4 billion, with $68 billion worth of goods exported from Alberta to the United States. Alberta imports from the U.S. totalled $16.4 billion,  approximately two thirds of Alberta’s total international imports, according to the release.

The premier has been speaking with industry leaders across the province about how to make the best case for Alberta south of the border.

Notley will be in Washington for four days. The cost of the trip is approximately $42,000, and includes Notley, three political staffers, one public servant and a security detail. This estimate also includes carbon offsets that were purchased for each member of the delegation.
