MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat firefighters, Jonhathan MacKenzie and Aaron Georget, are finally warm again.

After camping out on the roof of Fire Station No.2 for 48 hours to raise money and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy Canada, the two firemen are now back inside.

The rooftop campout is an annual event. Firefighters across the country take part to fundraise for the neuromuscular disorder.

MacKenzie and Georget took to the roof Friday at noon. Enduring all weather conditions, the two had to find ways to stay warm, but said all the community support kept them motivated.

“All the people stopping by keeps you going,” said MacKenzie.  “We had slower times when you start to get a little cold but then you’d have a whole flood of vehicles come in again and that’s really what keeps you going, seeing the support from our community.”

Medicine Hat celebrated its seventh annual campout in memory of the firehall’s friend, Michael Page.

“He was a real supporter of us, always around the firehall and unfortunately he passed away several years ago from muscular dystrophy and we just kept it going,” firefighter Clancy Sederberg said. “He’s been our, the guy we fundraise for.”

Sederberg, the event organizer, said over $12 000 was donated this year. Last year the event brought in $17 000 .  Sederberg said the change in location might have been part of the reason for the loss.

Nonetheless, Medicine Hat firefighters are still thankful for all of the community support and said its always great to raise money for a good cause and help local families who struggle with muscular dystrophy.
