Rattlers come up just short against RDC in ACAC championship

Red Deer, AB — The Medicine Hat College men’s volleyball program will have to wait a little longer to capture their first ACAC gold medal since 1972 after falling in five sets to Red Deer College (20-25, 25-17, 25-20, 17-25, 15-9) Saturday night in the ACAC Championship.

MHC stormed out of the gate to take the first set before the defending national champs responded by winning the next two. The Rattlers then forced a fifth and final frame by taking the fourth. However the Kings lived up to their name, claiming their fourth ACAC banner in five years and second in a row.

The Rattlers were led by All-Canadian and ACAC Player of the Year Isak Helland-Hansen. The Norwegian had 16 kills and 6 digs, while Joel Kotyk turned in a solid performance as well finishing with 14 kills and 8 digs.

Regan Fathers was a one-man wrecking crew for RDC. He had a game high 26 kills.

The Rattlers aren’t done quite yet though. They secured a spot to nationals by making it to the ACAC championship, and they’ll look to get revenge against RDC when the two teams represent the conference there.

Fanshawe College in London, Ont. is hosting the tournament which runs from March 9-11.
