Feb 18, 2017 | 5:06 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Police have charged one man in relation to a grass fire last night.

Firefighters and police officers responded to the fire shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday evening.

The fire broke out in the field between the Clarion Hotel and Gas City Campgrounds.

Crews managed to get it under control quickly and then worked to put out hot spots.

There was no damage to any nearby structures. Police say the man they arrested was found in possession of fire starting materials.

“We located a male in the area with the help of some witnesses,” said S/Sgt. Jason Graham.

Wesley VanBocquestal, 61, of Medicine Hat has been charged with arson, possession of incendiary material, breach of recognizance and 3 counts of breach of probation.

“We don’t believe it was a target, nobody was targeted for it, it was just something that possibly may have gotten out of hand,” said S/Sgt. Jason Graham.

VanBocquestal has since been released and is scheduled to appear in court on March 16, 2017.
