MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Royal United Services Institute of Medicine Hat (RUSIMH) is asking for the City of Medicine Hat’s approval to create a new monument commemorating the efforts of local soldiers during the First World War.

RUSIMH is looking to build a rock structure on the hillside near 3rd Street NW and Saamis Drive.

The structure would be made of stones painted white reading ‘3CMR’ and underneath would be the numbers ‘175’.

The ‘3CMR’ stands for the Third Canadian Mounted Rifles who fought in WWI. The numbers represent the 175th Battalion.

On one side of the structure, there will be a maple leaf made of red rocks and on the other side there may be a poppy made of red and black rocks.

The monument will also mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge and the Battle of Passchendaele.

Major Scott Payne with RUSIMH said it will be a testament to Medicine Hat’s contributions to the war.

“We think this is a great way to educate people about what Medicine Hat did during WWI, the Great War.” said Payne. “It’s over 100 years ago and it’s important we remember our history.”

The cost to build the monument is $97,000. If city council approves the project the institute will pay for the construction, maintenance, and all other costs associated with the monument indefinitely.
