To the victor go the spoils: Yip Tsz Fung takes home Gas City Open title, $25,000

Medicine Hat, AB — $25,000 was on the line Sunday afternoon at the downtown YMCA as the 2017 Holtrand Gas City Open PSA final took place. In the end, Hong Kong native Yip Tsz Fung (35th in the world) came away with a 5 game decision over Qatari Abdulla Al Tamimi (38th in the world).

The two world-class squash players split the first two games before Al Tamimi moved ahead by winning the third one. Al Tamimi was only two points away from winning the match, but Tsz Fung battled back to win 12-10 forcing a fifth and final game.

In the decisive frame things would come down to the wire like they had in the fourth. Tied 10-10 Tsz Fung went up 11-10, then a controversial call against Al Tamimi gave the Hong Kong native the title.

“It’s incredible,” said Tsz Fung after the match. “This is my biggest title so far.”

Meanwhile, Al Tamimi says he just couldn’t sustain the level of play he was hoping for throughout the whole match.

“I played alright,” he said. “I managed to play the right tactic some but I couldn’t keep it up.”

Out of fear, Tsz Fung said he hadn’t even checked to see what the tournament’s purse was before embarking on the march that eventually led to him winning it. Now though?

“I will check, definitely,” he said with a laugh.

Both men say they’re now heading back to their respective training grounds before they compete at tournaments next month in England.
