Medicine Hat, AB — It was a big day for track and field here in the city as the Family Leisure Centre hosted the first ever indoor track meet put on by the Medicine Hat Panthers Track Club.

Over 60 athletes ranging in age from 7-years-old to 68-years-old participated in the inaugural meet which featured a number of distances.

Panthers Head Coach Sonya Brown says the FLC expansion has been huge for her organization as it’s allowed them to grow and expand the club.

“We’ve never actually had an adequate facility to run an indoor track meet,” said Brown. “But because of the FLC expansion they built this beautiful 200 metre track, we are now able to host indoor track meets.”

Elias Smith was competing in the 200m, 800m, and 1200m events for his age group Saturday. The 14-year-old says he’s basically been doing track ever since he began running, and adds the new indoor facility at the FLC makes it a lot more convenient for him to develop as an athlete.

“It’s easier because there’s not a lot of travel,” he said. “You don’t have to go up to Calgary or Lethbridge you can just stay here, which is easier on me and my family.”
