Science Olympics aim to get more kids involved with science

MEDICINE HAT, AB —Dozens of students took part in the first Science Olympics hosted by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) in Medicine Hat today.

The event was held at the Medicine Hat College and attracted 10 teams made up of grade four to six students from around the area.

“It’s huge to get kids interested [in science] at a young age because really by the time you get to university it’s tough to say what you want to do unless you’ve had a chance to play with these concepts before,” said Keely McPhee an outreach coordinator with APEGA.

The students had a chance to test their creativity and science knowledge in three seperate challenges.

The event coincides with International Day of Women and Girls in Science and while McPhee admitted that wasn’t planned, she said that APEGA is currently pushing to have females make up at least 30 percent of engineer and geoscience professionals by 2030.

“We know that girls are interested in engineering and geoscience but somehow it doesn’t always translate to how many females are in those professions.”

A number of girls took part in today’s science olympics including an all girl’s team.
