Police concerned about spike in heroin and methamphetamine

Feb 3, 2017 | 10:57 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service says heroin and methamphetamine use is a growing problem in the city.

In 2016, police seized a total of 52.5 grams of heroin and nearly 1.5 kilograms of methamphetamine from city streets. According to a police news release, these numbers represent a 400 per cent increase in the amount of methamphetamine seized in 2015, and a nearly 700 per cent increase in heroin. Police say the numbers are concerning, as both of the drugs are highly addictive.

Methamphetamine can cause aggressive, violent and psychotic behaviours and many users report getting addicted from the first time they use it. Police say it is also one of the hardest drugs to treat.

This information comes following the announcement that carfentanil, a opioid 100 times stronger than fentanyl that has been linked to deaths across Canada, was discovered during a recent drug seizure in the city.

Medicine Hat police advises residents they can report illegal drug activity anonymously by calling the Drug Tip Line at 403-502-8909.

If you or someone you know is in need of treatment for drug addiction or substance abuse, call the AHS Addictions Help Line at 1-866-332-2322.
