Groundhogs forecast early spring, though Alberta will likely see a longer winter

Feb 2, 2017 | 5:57 AM

ONTARIO, CANADA – Canada’s groundhogs are split on whether there will be an early spring this year.

Ontario’s Wiarton Willie and Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam both failed to see a shadow when they emerged from their burrows this morning.

However, Balzac Billy did see his shadow this morning, indicating winter is not quite over for Albertans.

Folklore says if a groundhog see’s a shadow on February 2nd – it means six more weeks for winter.

Punxsutawney Phil, the world-famous ground hog in Pennsylvania, saw his shadow – and was booed when he forecast six more weeks of winter there.
