Gally scores 1st career goal in 7-2 slugfest over Edmonton

MEDICINE HAT — Goal scoring came early and often for the home team Friday night.

Dalton Gally potted his first career WHL goal, Matt Bradley recorded a three-point night, and the Medicine Hat Tigers exploded offensively in a 7-2 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Gally, a product of New Braunfels, Texas, finally notched his first goal in his 37th career game. Just one more full-time Tiger has yet to score this season; fellow d-man Dylan MacPherson.

In what many would call a full 60-minute game for the black-and-orange, Edmonton scored the opening goal. Nicholas Bowman got the Oil Kings on the board with a powerplay marker just 1:39 into the game.

But the Tigers had the immediate answer.

Mason Shaw scored less than three minutes later, pushing his point-streak to nine-games. Gally followed up with the go-ahead goal crossing the midway mark of the first. Matt Bradley rounded out the scoring to give Medicine Hat a 3-1 lead through 20 minutes of play.

Second period action basically mimicked the opening frame. Rookie Gary Haden gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead with his 4th of the season, but Adam Berg cut the lead in half less than two minutes later.

Clayton Kirichenko brought the crowd to life with a “goal of the year” candidate moments afterwards. The Tigers captain undressed one Oil Kings defenseman with a knee-knocking toe-drag, and finished top-shelf on Dechaine. The overage defenseman now has three goals and 10 points in his last six games.

Defenseman Jordan Henderson’s second in two games wrapped up a dominating middle frame for the Tabbies.

Medicine Hat cracked down defensively in the third period, ensuring there was no chance of giving up their lead. Steven Owre scored with mere seconds left on the clock to give the Tigers a 7-2 win. In three games against Edmonton, they’ve combined for 20 goals.

The Tigers are now 24-1-0-0 when leading after 40 minutes of play and improve to 15-4-0-0 against Central Division rivals. They remain six points up on the Lethbridge Hurricanes for the division lead.

Medicine hat returns to action tomorrow night, hosting Nolan Patrick and the Brandon Wheat Kings in a rematch from last Saturday. Patrick, a favorite to go first overall in the NHL Entry Draft this spring, scored twice in a 5-2 win for his team. Game time is 7:30pm from the Canalta Centre. The legendary Bob Ridley takes the mic for play-by-play on CHAT 94.5 FM, beginning with the pre-game show at 7:00pm.
