B.C. bound Tigers take on slumping Kootenay Ice

Jan 24, 2017 | 11:49 AM

Since off-loading their two offensive threats at the WHL Trade Deadline, it’s hard to have much optimism for the Kootenay Ice’ final few months of the season.

Zak Zborosky and Matt Alfaro remain first and second in team scoring respectively, despite living a happy, playoff-bound life with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Their departure brought in two forwards in Brett Davis (’99) and Colton Kroeker (’97), along with a slew of draft picks.

This shows a potentially promising future for a team that missed the playoffs for the first time in franchise history last season.

But on the other end of the ice, Medicine Hat hopes to regain control of a slippery month of January.

The Tabbies are 5-5 in their last 10, which includes a win over the CHL’s best team the Regina Pats, and a loss to the 20-22-5-1 Saskatoon Blades. Much of this comes from battling through blue-line adversity. The loss of slap-shot aficionado David Quenneville and veteran Ty Schultz due to broken legs has brought a heavier workload on the back end.

Redcliff’s Dylan MacPherson and Dalton Gally have taken more responsibility on the back-end, while prospects Cameron MacPhee and Cole Clayton are just a phone-call away.

Medicine Hat hasn’t had a problem against Kootenay this season. They’re 3-0, and have the chance to win the season series tonight. Mason Shaw has recorded 10 assists in those three games, 20% of his season total. Matt Bradley and John Dahlstom each have seven points (4G, 3A).

Zborosky and Alfaro combined for four points in those three games. Both have one goal, while Zborosky had two assists.

Fisticuffs are a possibility in this one, as the two top penalty takers go head to head. Tigers forward Zach Fischer (110 min) takes on Barrett Sheen (107 min).

Puck drop between Medicine Hat and Kootenay is 7:00pm MST. Bob Ridley takes the mic for full play-by-play on CHAT 94.5, beginning with the pregame show at 6:45pm.
