Colts trample Cubs 6-1

Medicine Hat, AB – Coming into Saturday night’s contest against the number one ranked team in the Heritage Junior Hockey League, the Medicine Hat Cubs were in good spirits. They had just beat Strathmore 8-3 the night before and sat tied with Banff for the final South Division playoff spot. But the Mountainview Colts, would not be reigned in on this evening.

The league’s fourth overall point getter Cole Sutherland opened up the scoring less than a minute in to give the Colts a early 1-0 lead. Brandon Stahl of the Cubs would answer back almost immediately though with his ninth of the year, and after 20 minutes things were tied up 1-1.

The final two periods would be all Mountainview, at least from the scoresheet side of things. Sutherland netted his second of the game less than 5 minutes into the second, and the Colts would tack on two more in the first forty putting the Cubs down 4-1. Two more goals in the third, including a late power-play marker by Benjamin Strautman, would make it a 6-1 final for Mountainview. Colts goalie Jake Carlson turned in a solid performance, setting aside 28 shots to pick up his 12th win of the season.

With the win Mountainview bypasses Airdrie for first spot in the North Division while still having two games in hand on the Thunder. As of Saturday night, the Cubs are still tied with Banff for fifth in the North Division but the Bears could change that if they win against Blackfalds on Sunday. The real worry for Medicine Hat right now however is High River. The Flyers have rattled off two wins in a row after going on a 16 game skid and now only sit 2 points behind the Cubs for the final south playoff spot. The Cubs will hit the road this upcoming Saturday to take on Coaldale (20-11-2), before returning to Medicine Hat for their final home game of the season a day later against Okotoks.
