Wheat Kings goaltender Thompson shines in 5-2 win over Tigers

Jan 21, 2017 | 9:14 PM

BRANDON, MB — The Medicine Hat Tigers ran into a hot goaltender Saturday night.

Logan Thompson made 41 saves as the Brandon Wheat Kings knocked off the Tabbies 5-2 in front of a home crowd. This is the Tigers third loss in the last five games.

Medicine Hat got a good taste of what Nolan Patrick is all about as well. The projected first overall pick in this year’s NHL draft scored twice, including the game’s opening marker midway through the first period.

Brandon took a 4-0 lead into the third period. Max Gerlach notched his 25th goal of the season with 12:17 to play. Mason Shaw found the twine moments later, extending his point streak to seven games.

That’s as close as Medicine Hat would get, after Patrick nabbed an empty netter in the final minute of play.

Thompson’s 41 save performance is his busiest night since stopping 51 shots against the Red Deer Rebels on October 26th.

Nick Schneider stopped 32 of 36 fired his way.

Medicine Hat wraps up a four-game stretch on the road against the Kootenay Ice on Tuesday. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
