MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Tigers managed to fight their way out of a rut this weekend.

After dropping a pair of games to the Lethbridge Hurricanes and the Regina Pats in the past week, the Tigers snapped their losing skid over the weekend, defeating the Vancouver Giants 5-4 at home on Saturday, and travelling to Edmonton to defeat the Oil Kings 5-2 on Sunday.

During Saturday’s game, the Giants were ahead 3-2 after two periods when the Tigers began to roar back.

Steven Owre, who scored during the second period, completed a hat trick in the third period to help pull the Tigers ahead for the win in front of 3,583 fans at the Canalta Centre. Owre’s third goal, which held as the game winner, came with seven seconds left in the game while the Tigers were shorthanded.

James Hamblin and John Dahlstrom also scored during Saturday’s game, while Chad Butcher notched three assists.

Michael Bullion, making his first start with the Tigers after a trade last week, made 27 saves on 31 shots.

Giants goaltender Ryan Kubic saw 40 shots through three periods, making 35 saves. James Malm scored twice for the Giants, while Jack Flaman and Ty Ronning each scored once. After the weekend, the Giants sit in 10th place in the Western Conference with a 16-23-1-2 record.

On Sunday, the Tigers topped the Oil Kings 5-2 at Rogers Centre in Edmonton.

Zack Fischer scored twice for the Tigers, while Hamblin, Dahlstrom and Matt Bradley added the remaining goals. Trey Fix-Wolansky and Adam Berg scored the lone goals for the Oil Kings.

Nick Schneider earned the win in goal for the Tigers, making 28 saves on 30 shots. Patrick Dea made 40 saves on 45 shots for the Oil Kings, who now sit in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with an 18-20-3-1 record.

The Tigers currently remain in second place in the east with a 29-12-1-0 record after the weekend.

The Tigers will host the Prince George Cougars, who are ranked first in the Western Conference and seventh in the country, on Wednesday night at the Canalta Centre. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
