MEDICINE HAT, AB — It was a late birth, but Medicine Hat`s first baby of 2017 arrived.

Holly and Brian Dueck of Medicine Hat welcomed Rory Quade at 4:32 p.m. on January 1. He came out at 10 pounds, 3 1/2 ounces.

“We named him Rory because of his red hair; Rory means red,” said Dueck. “And Quade, well, we thought it was cute and it means fourth born child.”

Dueck was originally due December 23 and went to the hospital on Dec. 31 for a checkup. She says because of the size of her baby, she was recommended to have a c-section.

“They asked if I wanted it today or tomorrow,” she said.

Both baby and mother are doing well, though Dueck admits Rory was somewhat of a surprise.

“I really thought he’d be a girl,” she said with a laugh, saying her new son surprised everyone in the family except for her oldest son.

Rory has two older brothers, 8-year-old Emery and 1 1/2 year-old Bromley, and an older sister, 6-year-old Alithea.

“It’ll be busy for sure,” said a tired but happy Dueck.
