Yuletide Bonspiel all about fun

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Curling Club continued its holiday tradition, and helped build new traditions for local families.

The club held its annual Yuletide Bonspiel Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing 80 curlers of all skill levels to the rink to compete for fun and prizes.

“We just try to make it fun for families in the holidays,” said Vicki Sjolie, general manager of the curling club.

Sjolie said the bonspiel used to be a regular event at the Curling Club many years ago, but fell by the wayside. The club brought it back around five years ago and it has one again become a holiday staple.

“The base are families,” she said. “Some of them only curl once a year in tbis, or the mom and dad might curl and bring the kids out. That’s how we got it going.

“We have some of our members that have mixed-up teams and have put names in hats. We have four senior teams that put everybody together, pulled names out, and that way, they still get to go out, socialize and do something over the holidays.”

Sjolie says fun remains the primary goal, even with the competitive aspect of a bonspiel.

“You want to get people out to enjoy the game,” said Sjolie. “You have some families and kids, and you hope they take an interest in it later.”

Sjolie says everybody at the tournament went home with a prize, though several teams were victorious in their division during the bonspiel.

In the “Elf” Division, Madison Stroh’s rink took home the title, winning all three games.

Shelly’s Shotmakers took home first place in the “Rudolph Bracket”, while Daryll Hubick’s team “The Old Grinches” finished first in the “Santa” Division.

Chane McCurdy’s junior team were victorious in the “Frosty” Division, while Greg Sjolie’s team were victorious in the “Scrooge” Division.
