Two men killed in Highway 2 collision

Dec 29, 2016 | 10:47 AM

INNISFAIL, AB — Two people from Calgary were struck and killed by a semi truck Thursday morning as one had stopped to help the other, who was stuck in the ditch alongside The Queen Elizabeth II Highway.

At 1:49 a.m., RCMP were dispatched to a report of two semi trucks and trailers were in the ditch on the west side of the highway.

Investigation revealed that one north bound semi truck and trailer crossed over the median and ended up in the west ditch. A good Samaritan pulled over to assist and was outside the vehicle with the driver of the semi, when another south bound semi truck ran into the debris from the first collision, and was forced into the ditch, striking both of the people who were outside of their vehicles.

Both residents were pronounced dead at the scene. RCMP confirmed they were both from Calgary.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours while the collision was investigated, but has since been reopened.

Neither speed or alcohol or road conditions are being considered as contributing factors in the collision. The file remains under investigation, and the names of the deceased are being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.
