Security questions raised after storage locker break-ins

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Residents affected by a recent rash of break-ins are hoping security measures at their building will improve to ensure their valuables continue to stay safe.

Medicine Hat police are continuing to investigate after more than 70 storage lockers in the Terrace area of Crescent Heights were broken into. The lockers hit are located in condo complexes in the area and were hit sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning.

Police say the units had been pried open and several items were taken. There were also several vehicles in the underground parking lot that had been entered and had items taken.

Police say their investigation is on-going and they expect upwards of 50 more people could be affected by the break-ins.

Residents affected by the break-ins are now raising some concerns. They say it’s the high number of lockers that were hit is what is particularly concerning.

A resident in one of the buildings says his storage locker was opened but luckily nothing was stolen, but he admits they’re not very secure. He says the units are basically just a door which locks into a plywood frame.

All exterior doors of the building are all locked and access is meant to be limited to residents and guests but the resident says more could be done to keep the garage and storage lockers secure.

“Perhaps more troubling is just the lack of on-site supervision or superintendent,” said the man, adding another solution could be cameras inside the garage. “They’ve promised them for as long as I’ve been here but they’re still not installed.”

Police have surveillance footage of three unidentified people who were captured on video entering these complexes, and are reviewing the video with hopes of identifying the suspects.

Police said these events are unfortunate and they are doing everything they can to get these people back their property. They also remind residents if they see suspicious activity to call them.
