CALGARY —Calgary police have charged a 30-year-old woman accused the theft of a purse which contained the ashes of a Medicine Hat woman’s son.

Carolin Kelly, of Calgary, was arrested and was charged in connection with the theft, which occurred at a hotel bar on Dec. 2.

Laura Hudson of Medicine Hat was in Calgary with her family for an event at the Alberta Children’s Hospital honouring families who have lost children. Laura’s son Hunter drowned six months ago before his first birthday, and carried his ashes in her purse with her.

The purse was stolen from the bar by two women, and Calgary police released surveillance footage of the women after one of them attempted to use credit cards found in the purse at a convenience store later in the evening.

Tips from the public led to the purse and the ashes being recovered and returned to Hudson.

Hudson says she just wanted her son’s ashes returns and does not intend to press any charges. She believes justice has been served.

“I just want them to learn a lesson from this and maybe just not do it again,” she said over the phone on Tuesday.

Kelly is facing one count of fraud under $5,000.

Calgary police identified a second woman in the surveillance footage, but it is unclear if she will face charges.
