MEDICINE HAT, AB —The Medicine Hat Police Service is investigating after a rash on break-and-enters in Crescent Heights late Sunday and into Monday morning.

Police are investigating a string of more than 70 break-and-enters in the Terrace area of Crescent Heights.

Medicine Hat Police received a call Monday morning from a resident at a condo complex who said their private storage unit had been broken in to. When officers arrived they discovered all of the storage units in at least one of the three complexes had been broken in to. Police say the units had been pried open and several items were taken. There were also several vehicles in the underground parkade that had been entered and had items taken.

Police say their investigation is on-going and they expect upwards of 50 more people could be affected by the break-ins.

Staff Sergeant Kelsey Fraser says there has likely been thousands of dollars worth of people’s property that’s been stolen, including Christmas presents.

“Some [items] were sporting goods, some were personal effects,” he said. “We do have one person up in Crescent Heights who is a single mom with two children and all of their Christmas presents were stolen. Which is unfortunate for two young children and a mom and she lost all the presents that she had wrapped for the kids.”

Police have surveillance footage of three unidentified suspects who were captured on video entering these complexes. They believe these three may be responsible for these crimes. Fraser says they will be reviewing the video in hopes of identifying and arresting the suspects.

Fraser said these events are unfortunate and police are doing everything they can to get these people back their property. He also reminds residents if they see suspicious activity to call them.

“I’d rather have someone call the police for suspicious activity and us find out it’s not, than not call and find out that they did a bunch of break and enters,” he said. “That’s what we’re here for.”

There were also between seven and 10 storage units broken into in the Flats area that same night. Police said they can’t say for sure at this point whether these thefts were linked.

Fraser says their investigation will likely continue on throughout the week.
