AHS considering pay-by-phone option for hospital parking

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Change could be coming to controversial parking protocols at hospitals across the province.

Alberta Health Services is considering a more mobile option for hospital visitors to pay for parking, potentially using a smartphone to make payments.

Steeve Rees with AHS said by logging into an app or making a quick phone call, it means you won’t have to keep running down to the front lobby to pay for extra time. Under the new system, payments can be made in the waiting room or in the hospital room.

“Either phoning a number or using the app and plugging your license number in there and just adding hours or adding minutes to your parking meter,” he said.

AHS brought a new system to Medicine Hat in February, where patients and visitors are required to pay for parking upon arriving at the hospital and estimating the amount of time they think they’ll be.

Many people say they miss the old system, which only made you pay for the time you used.

Details on the pay-by-phone option have not yet been finalized.

AHS expects a pilot project to begin in the Calgary zone starting in the new year and it may be extended to other centers.
