MEDICINE HAT, AB — A city program which helps families with their utility payments is looking for more support from the community to keep it going.

Since 2010, the Community Warmth Program run by the City of Medicine Hat has been helping to provide utility support for residents in the community experiencing financial hardship.

Each year, people are can donate to the program by adding money to their own utility bill or making a one time donation. The local chapter of the Salvation Army helps administer the program.

As of October, 47 families were registered asking for help with their bills.

Denise Schmaltz with the city says they’re always looking for more donations to keep the program going.

“Right now we would really like to see 50 more customers donate a dollar a month to help an additional family for next year.”

People looking to donate can make arrangements by calling the city at  403-529-8111 or by e-mail at customer_accounts@medicinehat.ca. Hatters can also participate in the program by speaking to the customer service desk at City Hall in person during business hours.
