Kettle Campaign donations down heading into final week

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Salvation Army’s annual Kettle Campaign is wrapping up this week and donations are down slightly from last year.

In 2015, the Christmas campaign raised $350,000. This year’s goal was to match that but  Michelle Schuett, coordinator of the campaign, says they were preparing for fewer donations due to the economy.

“Watching people losing their jobs and things like what, we expected to be behind,” said Schuett.

As of last week, the campaign was down 26 per cent from last year but this past weekend, the final weekend of the campaign, saw an increase of donations.

Schuett says after counting money from this weekend the campaign is only 4 percent down from last year.

“The money stays 100 percent in our community and it goes to our Resource Centre. Helps with emergency services and any programs like the hot meal program, anything we run here at the Family Resource Centre,” said Schuett.

Kettle bell ringers will still be out and about collecting donations this week, until the end of the day Friday, December 23.
